The most Underrated Formation in EA FC 26 | How the 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow gives you Midfield Control?
To dominate EA FC 26 at a more professional level, you need to understand more formations and tactics. Always using a single formation may not be effective in all matches. Next, we'll explore the application of the 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow formation in FC 26.
What is a 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow?
4-1-2-1-2 Narrow is ideal for players who like to control the ball in midfield because its sufficient passing speed and movement can quickly break down the opponent's defense.
This formation's build-up is balanced because players will flexibly choose to push forward or drop back to receive the ball based on the situation, which is more efficient than simply pushing forward or dropping back. The defensive strength is also high, without the need for fine-tuning to 64-67 like professional players.
Player Roles for Each Position
It's best to have corresponding plus roles for each player, as this can generally be achieved through Evolutions later in the game. Additionally, if you have enough FC 26 coins to unlock the best players for each position, that's ideal.
Goalkeeper
First, we'll choose Sweeper Keeper as our goalkeeper.
This type of goalkeeper can proactively come out of the box and pressure the striker when the opponent is one-on-one. Unlike Ball Playing Keeper, they don't aimlessly rush out, nor do they rigidly guard the goal line like traditional goalkeepers. They are very flexible.
Center Backs
We'll choose two defensive center backs. This is arguably the most stable center back setup in FC 26. For three-center backs or five-back formations, you can consider Ball Playing Defender, but this formation doesn't require it.
Full Backs
Here, we'll choose Fullback and Defend. We need to require both fullbacks to be assigned defensive responsibilities, not participating too much in the attack, thus solidifying the defense. After all, one of the characteristics of this formation is high defensive intensity.
Defensive Midfielder
The defensive midfielder needs to be selected with Holding and Ball Winning. This ensures that our defensive midfielder focuses on defense and disrupts the opponent's attack. Especially effective against attacking midfielders and central midfielders in 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 formations, launching quick counter-attacks.
Midfield Duo
Our right central midfielder is Box-to-Box and Ball Winning. This is more defensively oriented, focusing on winning back possession while providing central support on both ends of the pitch.
The left central midfielder is Box-to-Box and Balanced. Unlike the right central midfielder, the left central midfielder is more attack-oriented, pushing deeper to create attacking depth with the false nine.
Attacking Midfielder
The roles chosen here are Playmaker and Balanced. Avoid Shadow Striker, as Playmaker better connects the attack and maintains defensive stability.
Two Strikers
The left striker is our False 9. His role here is to drop back into midfield to receive and organize attacks, acting as a second attacking midfielder. You should choose a player who is agile, dribbles well, and passes effectively.
For the right striker, we need to position him at the forefront, using his speed and physicality to attack the defense. He needs to be tall, fast, and have strong finishing ability. Therefore, Advanced Forward is chosen here.
Tactical Strategies and Attacking Patterns
Our core idea is to make asymmetrical forward runs.
The left central midfielder will make forward runs from the left, bypassing the retreating False 9, and directly attack the last line of defense. The right central midfielder, however, has limited space to move forward due to the right striker already positioned near the offside line, so he will focus more on defense.
For example, the left central midfielder can carry the ball forward or run into space, then the false 9 can drop back to draw the center-backs away, the right striker can draw the defense, and finally, the center attacking midfielder can deliver a through ball.
Additionally, during defense and transitions, the formation must be kept compact when there is no ball.
The center-backs should form a double interception barrier with the right central midfielder, and then the full-backs should tuck in for cover. After winning the ball, quickly pass it to the advancing striker through the center attacking midfielder or the false 9 to launch a quick counter-attack.
Player Playstyle Requirements
Since we should try to add multiple PlayStyles to players through Evolutions, they don't necessarily have to be gold-tier.
- Goalkeeper: Far Reach+, Low Driven Shot+.
- Full-back: Bruiser, Pinged Pass, Intercept, Anticipate, Jockey, and Quick Step. Lengthy speed-enhancing skills are preferred.
- Center-back: Over 190cm tall, Lengthy type, possessing Quick Step, Bruiser, and various defensive skills, preferably with Pinged Pass for passing.
- Defensive Midfielder: Intercept, Incisive, Tiki Taka, Pinged Pass, Anticipate, Bruiser, Technical, First Touch.
- Right Central Midfielder: Defensive-oriented, similar to defensive midfielder but can have Finesse Shot+.
- Left Central Midfielder: Offensive-oriented, requires Finesse Shot+, Low Driven Shot+, Rapid+, and at least Intercept.
- Attacking Midfielder: Finesse Shot+, Low Driven Shot+, Pinged Pass, Tiki Taka, Incisive Pass+, First Touch, Technical.
- Left Forward: Short and agile, good passing, possesses Finesse Shot+, Low Driven Shot+, Tiki Taka.
- Right Forward: Tall and fast, lengthy type, possesses Power Shot+, Tiki Taka, Finesse Shot+.
Finally, players should note in actual gameplay that, because of the lack of wingers, patience is required in passing the ball through the middle; avoid blindly throwing the ball forward.
Defensively, utilize the double-ball-winning roles of the defensive midfielder and right central midfielder to frequently press. Offensively, utilize the forward runs of the left central midfielder, sending through balls via the attacking midfielder or false nine.
So, these are the strategies for using the 4-1-2-1-2 formation in FC 26. Hope you use it successfully!
