Helldivers 2 Dev Responds: The Truth About Custom Mech, Attachments, and Balance Changes
Helldivers 2 CCO Johan Pilestedt has shared his thoughts regarding the recent backlash and controversies surrounding the game.
Through these responses, we have learned that the concept of Custom Mech has not been entirely ruled out, and that Johan Pilestedt has noted the community's desires regarding Helldivers 2.
Furthermore, Johan Pilestedt detailed how the development team intends to enhance and balance the game in the future.
Custom Mech and Warbonds
One player asked why Mech were locked behind Warbond system instead of being provided to players for free. The player also suggested that the developers provide more Mech-related gear, such as Mech repair tools, Mech supply packs, and Mech boosters to the community.
CCO responded that the reason for this approach is that these new Mech are merely variations of existing equipment - a situation analogous to adding two new shotguns to a Warbond. Currently, the base game already features two free standard Mech models. With this update, if you have a particular fondness for Mech-based gameplay, you can acquire this specific Warbond to unlock a wider variety of options for Mech combat.
As for Custom Mech feature, it has not yet been completely ruled out of future plans. While the team does indeed have future plans in place, they are still a considerable distance away from actual implementation. It remains unclear at this time whether Mech customization capabilities are included within those future plans.
Attachments and Expanding Customization
A player asked on the forums: Is there any clarity regarding the extent to which weapon customization will be expanded - or, indeed, if it will be expanded at all? If so, can we look forward to new attachments such as suppressors or different ammunition types?
CCO responded: It will indeed be expanded. However, an exact timeline cannot be provided at this moment; it is highly likely that this initiative will be implemented as part of broader improvements to the game's progression system. The specific details of how this will be achieved are yet to be determined.
Nevertheless, several fundamental attachments - such as suppressors and Under-Barrel Grenade Launchers (UGLs) - are definitely slated for future release. As for ammunition types, the developers have actually already completed the assets for them; however, they have not yet been enabled in the game because balancing this type of content presents an extremely tricky challenge. Regarding the expansion of weapon and armor customization features, CCO confirmed that these aspects will indeed be improved and expanded upon in the future. However, before tackling that, they must first clear their existing technical debt and continue releasing regular updates for the game. They are working tirelessly to ensure that every game update meets exceptionally high quality standards.
Galactic Map and Vehicles
Regarding Galactic War system, the team is currently working on optimizing it. The development team has brainstormed some very cool ideas for the future evolution of Galactic War; however, as Johan Pilistad noted, simply maintaining the day-to-day operations of the war system currently consumes a significant amount of their time and energy.
As for Mech vehicles, from the developers' perspective, they are no different from any other Stratagem. Although Mech possess a visually imposing and substantial presence, within the developers' design philosophy, they are essentially no different from other Stratagems such as AC-8 Autocannon or Turrets.
Various Stratagems are intended to feature overlapping and interwoven effects; this ensures that for every challenge encountered in the game, players have a rich and diverse array of distinct strategic options to choose from.
Balance Patches Explained
CCO explained that there is often a discrepancy between an item's actual statistical performance and how effectively players utilize it. Occasionally, the developers use data analysis to identify items that appear to be outliers in terms of efficiency, and they attempt to make adjustments accordingly.
However, it is often difficult to determine whether player reactions are driven by personal preference or by the item's actual performance, particularly with Helldivers 2 Items that are designed to be fun and engaging rather than simply intended to provide maximum statistical output.
Furthermore, balance adjustments often trigger a strong backlash from the community, creating an atmosphere where every single change is subjected to intense scrutiny. This has made the developers increasingly apprehensive when making adjustments, out of fear of sparking unnecessary controversy.
Johan Pilistad believes that the development team should be more bold and decisive when making changes; however, given that team morale is highly susceptible to the influence of community feedback, they have ultimately chosen to proceed with caution. Consequently, they have decided to re-evaluate the prioritization of balance adjustment tasks and streamline the process to better align with the actual needs of the community.
Although discussions regarding which items constitute balance anomalies are often diverse and rife with conflicting information, the developers should - quite rightly be able to base their adjustments on the topics generating the most buzz and the issues drawing the most concentrated feedback within the community.
Super Credits Adjustments
Johan Pilistad stated his belief that the acquisition rate for Super Credits should be weighted more heavily toward high-difficulty missions, thereby making the overall gaming experience more engaging. After all, repeatedly grinding for resources on lower difficulty settings can be an incredibly tedious and monotonous task; however, the developers intend to proceed with extreme caution when balancing this specific aspect of the game, as such adjustments inevitably tend to trigger strong reactions from the player base.
From Johan Pilistad's candid insights, we can truly sense the developers' dedication and sincerity. I sincerely hope that the development team will provide the community with a heads-up - a glimpse of their intentions - before officially implementing any adjustments, allowing us to gain some insight into the direction of future changes; after all, player feedback can be - and often is - remarkably valuable.
